Gonzalez elected new trustee for Eastern Visayas

          Judge Candelario V. Gonzalez, past president of the Silliman Alumni Association, Inc., is the new alumni representative to the Board of Trustees for East Visayas. Judge Gonzalez was the lone nominee for the said position and was declared winner by the Board of Directors of the SAAI and confirmed by the Board of Trustees in its April meeting. He will serve for a term of five years starting June 2008. As per Art. XI, Sec. 2 (b) “… In the event that there is only one candidate for the Trustee seat for which an election is held, the election shall be dispensed with and the candidate immediately proclaimed winner by the Board of Directors.”

SAAI responds to call for support for Iloilo victims of Typhoon Frank

          The Alumni Association donated the amount of P10,000  for  the victims of Typhoon Frank in Iloilo City .Dr. Ben Malayang III, university president, in his letter said: “This is the time we are most needed to unite and act as one community.. Let us join hands in extending aid and support to our affected brothers and  sisters in Iloilo City .  Let us respond and act as healing agents to help shed light on the lives of those affected.”

          The University sent a truckload of relief goods (rice, food, water, and clothing) through our reliable fire truck with some faculty members and staff  to Iloilo City  to help clean up our sister school Central Philippine University. A second batch of relief goods was sent to Iloilo City through the assistance of Bacolod chapter president, former Mayor Luzviminda “Joy” Santos-Valdez. The Association, through the Iloilo City chapter president, Leopoldo Moragas, also sent a box of goods to our alumni in the province of Aklan and sacks of rice  from the university. Our alumni in that area of Panay were also badly hit by Typhoon Frank. More boxes of goods were  sent to Aklan via courier through the Aklan chapter president  J’Roel Del Rosario. The goods were donations from  students, faculty and staff, and alumni. The university also extended help through Iloilo UCCP to be distributed to UCCP churches in Iloilo and Antique. The Office of the University Alumni and External Affairs and  the SAAI  helped in the collection of these donations.

3 alumni recognized for service rendered

          Judge Rafael Crescencio Tan Jr., Atty Manuel James Raterta, and Atty. Felipe Antonio Remollo were recognized in the Tipon Alumni and Community Fellowship Night on August 28, 2008 for their dedicated service and unwavering support to the programs and objectives of the Silliman Alumni Association, Inc.

          Judge Tan served as vice president and member of the Board of Directors representing East Visayas; Atty. Raterta was member of the Executive Committee and member of the Board of Directors representing Luzon; and, Atty. Remollo served as Alumni Trustee Representative for East Visayas.

Alumni Hall dorm undergoes renovation

          The Alumni Hall dormitory, which is under the management of the Silliman Alumni Association, Inc., recently underwent some refurbishing. All bathrooms have been  retiled with hot and cold shower.  The rooms will soon be named after the alumni chapter that sponsored the improvement and renovation of the said rooms. Lifetime members of the Association are entitled to a 10 percent discount when they stay at the dormitory.  The Davao City and SOCSKSARGEN chapters have given the amount of  P35, 000 as donation for the improvement of the rooms. The other chapters that pledged to sponsor the other rooms are: SU Alumni Association of Metro Manila, Inc.; Cabadbaran Chapter, Cagayan de Oro City Chapter, and Puerto Princesa, Palawan Chapter.
